Biography

Hodeuk Kim has been delving into the darkness and the depth of the ink through leaving traces of ink stick on empty white space. He has developed many series of works such as the one that he dashes off with one brush stroke without any hesitation. This expressive performance stems from standardized frame of Eastern painting in the artist’s own unique formative language for seeking the essence and creating his own means of communication regardless of materials. The hieroglyphic ‘muk (墨)’ consists of ‘black (黑)’ and ‘soil (土)’; the artist has been recording his life in discovering the cosmos, life, cheerfulness and vividness from the ashes remained after burning. The artist received his bachelors and masters degree in painting from Seoul National University.
